Sell digital downloads

Printables, patterns and other files that buyers get the moment they pay.

A download is a file buyers get straight after paying, like a printable, a pattern or a zine as a PDF. Downloads never run out, so there’s no stock to count.

  1. Step 1: In a new product, choose Download under How do people get it? Choose Both if you also post a printed version: buyers pick one, each with its own price.
  2. Step 2: Under Download files, choose your file: a PDF, an image or a zip, up to 500 MB. It stays private, and it’s attached when you save.
  3. Step 3: On a product you’ve already saved, press Add a file, give it a Name customers see, and press Add file.

Buyers find their files in their account’s library on your shop, and through a private link in their order email. Check the file downloads it for you, so you can see what buyers get.

If a download is going in the shop without a file, the panel beside the form warns you. Buyers get the file the moment they pay, so add it first.

Press New version on the file and choose the new one. Give its Version and a line about What’s new, which goes in the email and on the download page. Leave Make this the current version ticked, and new and past buyers download this one from now on. Tick Tell everyone who owns this to send them a short email.

Older versions stay in Version history. A file people own can’t be removed, so they never lose what they paid for.

When you add a file, or press Edit on one, choose Who gets it: Everyone who buys this product, or one version, like the download. Only saved versions are listed. Changing it later doesn’t take the file from people who already have it.

Each file says how many people own it. Email owners sends them all a note that the current version is ready, with a link to their downloads.

To go back, open Version history on the file and press Make current beside an older version. Buyers download that one from now on, and their links keep working.

Emails only go while Email customers about new versions is on in Settings, Downloads.

Most shops leave downloads unlimited, because people lose files and change phones. Settings, Downloads can limit how many times each file is downloaded (Download limit), or make links stop working a number of days after buying (Link expiry). You can lift a limit for one buyer from their order.

Email customers about new versions, in Settings, Downloads, starts switched on. While it’s off, each file on a product says so, and neither a new version nor Email owners sends anything.

Downloads and changing their mindLink to Downloads and changing their mind

Buyers usually have 14 days to change their mind, but for downloads that right ends once they’ve started downloading, as long as they agreed to get the files straight away. Checkout asks them to tick a box whenever the basket has a download. Its wording is in Settings, Checkout, under More options: if you change it, keep the meaning the same.
