The design editor and sections

Add, move, hide and edit the sections on your pages, then publish when you’re happy.

Design is where you arrange your shop. The list of sections is on the left (below the preview on a phone), and your shop is on the right.

Everything you change goes into a draft. Buyers see nothing new until you press Publish.

Editing sectionsLink to Editing sections

  • Click a section, in the list or in the preview, to change its words and photos. The few things most people change come first, and the rest are under More options.
  • Drag sections into a new order, or use Move up and Move down in a section’s menu.
  • Press the eye to hide a section from buyers without losing it. Hide from buyers at the foot of a section does the same.
  • Duplicate makes a second copy just below. Remove takes it away, with Undo in the note that follows.
  • Some sections are made of smaller parts, like the questions in Questions or the photos in a Photo gallery. Open the section to add, reorder and edit them.

Everything saves as a draft as you go. Buyers only see it once you press Publish.

Adding a sectionLink to Adding a section

Press Add section under the page’s sections, or Add a section below in a section’s menu to put it in a particular place. Add a section shows a picture and a line about every kind that fits, in groups.

A new section starts with example words and, where it needs one, one of your own product photos. A page can have up to 40 sections. Some kinds fit only once on a page, and the picker says which are already there.

Copying a section to another pageLink to Copying a section to another page

In a section’s menu, choose Copy to another page, then pick where. The copy goes at the end, and you can move it from there.

The two are separate afterwards: change one and the other stays as it is. Places a section can’t go are greyed out with the reason, like a page that already has one.

Pages you can arrangeLink to Pages you can arrange

Choose the page at the top: Home page, Product pages, Shop and collections and Content pages. The home page is made entirely of sections. The others keep the template’s own layout, and the sections you add show below each page’s own content, on every page of that kind. The header and footer are on every page.

Showing under the page’s name picks which product, collection or page the preview uses, so you can check a long one and a short one.

Kinds of sectionLink to Kinds of section

There are 19: Big welcome, Categories, Row of products, Grid of products, Offer banner, Downloads, Next drop, Collections, Reviews, Journal, Picture and words, Words, Photo gallery, Questions, Promises, Newsletter sign-up, Video, Kind words and Find me at.

  • Big welcome: A large heading, a line or two about the shop, a button and a photo.
  • Categories: Every top-level category, with its picture.
  • Row of products: A sideways-scrolling row: new things, bestsellers, a collection or ones you pick.
  • Grid of products: Products in a tidy grid.
  • Offer banner: A bold banner for a sale or a launch, with a round badge.
  • Downloads: Shows off your instant downloads and the library that keeps them.
  • Next drop: A countdown to your next scheduled release, with its waitlist. Hidden when nothing is coming.
  • Collections: Your featured collections, as big banners.
  • Reviews: Your latest published reviews and your average rating.
  • Journal: Your latest journal posts.
  • Picture and words: A photo beside a heading, some text and a button. Good for your story.
  • Words: A heading and a few paragraphs, centred or to one side.
  • Photo gallery: A grid of photos: your studio, your process, your makes in the wild.
  • Questions: Questions and answers that open and close.
  • Promises: A row of short promises, like free delivery or gift wrapping.
  • Newsletter sign-up: A box where buyers can join your emails. It uses your newsletter settings, and hides itself if sign-ups are switched off.
  • Video: A video you upload, or one from YouTube or Vimeo. It only plays when someone presses play.
  • Kind words: Nice things people have said about your shop: quotes you type in, or reviews you pick.
  • Find me at: The craft fairs, markets and open studios you’ll be at. Each date drops off once it’s over, and the section hides when nothing is coming up.

Rows and grids of productsLink to Rows and grids of products

Row of products scrolls sideways; Grid of products lays products out in rows. In both, Products chooses where they come from: Newest first, Bestsellers, From a collection, From a category or Ones I choose.

How many is under More options. Every choice but Ones I choose keeps itself up to date as you add products.

Big welcome and Picture and wordsLink to Big welcome and Picture and words

Big welcome sits at the top of a page: a heading, a line or two, a photo and a button. Leave the photo empty and it uses a bestseller’s photo; leave the text empty and it uses your shop’s description.

Picture and words puts a photo beside a heading, some words and a button, which suits your story or a new range. Photo on the under More options swaps the side.

A button’s words are in Button, and where it goes is Button goes to, under More options.

Offer banner has a heading, some words, a photo and a button, with a round badge for the big words, like a price or Free.

A new banner starts with example words, badge and all. Until you change them, Publish lists the banner under Worth a look first, so you don’t show an offer you aren’t running. Hide or remove it when the offer ends.

Next drop counts down to the next product you’ve set to go on sale at a set time, and lets buyers join its waitlist. There’s nothing to fill in: it reads the date from the product.

It hides itself when nothing is coming up, so it’s safe to leave on your home page between drops.

Reviews and Kind wordsLink to Reviews and Kind words

Reviews shows your latest published reviews and your average rating, by itself.

Kind words is yours to choose: pick up to 6 published reviews in Reviews to show, and add quotes people sent you, with What they said, Their name and Where they’re from. Ask before using someone’s words, or use a first name only.

A new quote starts with example words that buyers never see. It shows once you change them.

Video plays a video you upload (MP4 or WebM, up to 200 MB) or a YouTube or Vimeo link you paste. It only plays when someone presses play.

  • What the video shows is a few words for people using a screen reader.
  • Cover photo shows until someone presses play.
  • Under More options: a Caption, a Transcript buyers can open, the Shape (Tall suits a phone held upright) and, for an uploaded video, Play on a loop, with no sound.

Videos you upload are kept in the media library too, so you can use one again in another section.

Find me at lists where buyers can meet you. Add a date for each: What it’s called, the Day (and Last day if it runs longer), Town, Venue and a short Note, like the stall number.

Each date drops off by itself once it’s over, and the section hides when nothing is coming up. Offer “Add to calendar”, under More options, puts a link under each date for buyers’ phones and computers.

Newsletter sign-upLink to Newsletter sign-up

Newsletter sign-up is a box with a heading, a line of words and a Button. It uses your newsletter settings, and hides itself if sign-ups are switched off there.

The footer has its own sign-up too, so you may only want this on the home page. Newsletters explains what happens after someone joins.

Questions and PromisesLink to Questions and Promises

Questions is a list of questions that open and close. Add up to 20, each with a Question and an Answer.

Promises is a row of up to 4 short promises, each with an Icon, a Title and a line of Text.

Both start with example words. Change them to your own before you publish: the editor reminds you.

Click Header at the top of the list. Your template draws it on every page: your logo (or your shop’s name), the menu, search and the basket, with the announcement bar above.

  • See your shop at computer, tablet and phone sizes with the buttons at the top.
  • Undo and redo are at the top too, or press Ctrl Z and Shift Ctrl Z (Cmd on a Mac).
  • The More menu has View your shop as buyers see it, How the editor works, Earlier designs, starting a page again and Throw away changes.
  • On a phone the list sits in a panel under the preview. The buttons along its top make it taller or shorter, or tuck it away to see more of the preview.

Press Publish at the top. Publish your changes? lists What changes, page by page, and Worth a look first: sections still showing example words, a product row with nothing to show, a video with no video. Click one to go straight to it.

Publish now shows everything to buyers straight away. Not yet keeps it as a draft. You can publish with things still to look at, and come back to them.

Throwing away changes and starting againLink to Throwing away changes and starting again

  • Throw away changes, in More, drops everything since you last published, on every page. This can’t be undone.
  • Start the home page again (or whichever page you’re on) puts just that page back to how your template starts it. Your other pages stay as they are, and you can undo it.

Each time you publish, a copy is kept (the last 10). More, then Earlier designs, lists them with the day, the template, who published it and what changed.

Put this in my draft brings one back to look over and publish again. Buyers see nothing until you do.

Saving, and editing in two windowsLink to Saving, and editing in two windows

Changes save by themselves a moment after you make them. The top of the editor says Saving…, Draft saved or Matches your shop.

  • If the connection drops, it says Couldn’t save, tries again by itself, and offers Try again.
  • Changes that never reached your draft are kept on that device. Next time you open the editor, Bring back your unsaved changes? offers them back.
  • If the editor is open in two windows, or someone on your team is editing too, the second to save sees Your design was changed in another window, and chooses Load the latest or Keep what’s here. Nothing is written over without asking.
